The kids weren’t as cooperative as I had hoped last night but what do you expect right?

The alarm went off on schedule at 5:30 so I promptly dismissed it and wondered what I was thinking yesterday. I did manage to roll out by 5:51, not what I had planned but better than the usual 7:00. I was in kind of a daze for awhile since I didn’t have a concrete plan of activities. I ended up doing some reading of Les Strouds, Survive. I’ve gotten hooked on the SurvivorMan series. I did some pushups, had my protein drink, and enjoyed the rain.

Not a bad start.

Blogwriter Lite for iTouch

Well I am going to give this app a try. Sweet! After discussing with the wife why it might be good to backup her 20,000+ pics, I was given the okay. Yes it's over 20 Thousand pictures. Thank God for digital. I think we still have about 100 rolls of film to develop before they die, but that's another dilemma. This is how I solved my current dilemma.

Introducing the Western Digital My Book Home Edition. It's an external Hard Drive. A pretty good one. It's technically a 500GB SATA drive. We purchased it from Costco for $129. It comes with some software. A program called WD anywhere backup, which I found less than useful. It didn't have enough features for me and my circumstances. It also comes with some Google software you could just download from the net. Again basically useless.

My current configuration is a 36GB OS drive and a 160GB data drive. I don't save anything to the OS drive, it's just the OS and programs. All data goes to the Data drive so I don't have to worry about my data when I need to do major config changes to the OS. The My Book comes pre-formatted to FAT 32, so that was a problem. Solution= reformat it to NTFS. I chose to use Windows XP pro backup utility. First I did a backup of the DATA drive and then I used the utility to do incremental backups daily at 10 pm.

So nothing fancy. Will it work, I believe so. Should I have a backup plan offsite, probably. Wish me luck, now back to that College Algebra.

CES in Las Vegas Hoot, Hoot!

Well CES is going on in Las Vegas right now. So I copied it to my library and started to work.

The first error I noticed was a "Edit word for T01.CURVAL total was not specified." So that meant we had a problem in the Report Column Formatting. A problem within the T01.CURVAL specification. The option set was 4 i.e. Edit word. It was set like this:

Edit word . . . . . ' , , 0 . -'
Edit word for
summary total . .

Nothing was set for the summary total. This was the first thing to fix. Every time I tried to set it I got a "Edit word does not match length for total summary function" error. Finally the ever helpful F1 function saved the day. It turns out that the length of a total field is 3 digits longer than the numeric field. Once I knew that it was simple.

He also wasn't getting the subtotals he wanted. His city report break was set to level "2", but hadn't set or formatted the level "2" break.

A couple of fairly easy things. I was just able to see them cause I was taking a quick look. I had fresh eyes, he had probably been working on it a while. Sometimes it just takes a fresh perspective.

FTP on the 400 or the iSeries (lessons learned)

I got the simple assignment of sending some source code to a sister company. It would have been simple if I had only done it a couple of times. Windows to Windows is pretty straight forward. You can just zip and e-mail. With the iSeries I decided I would use FTP. Quick and easy, right?!

FTP can be done with only a few parameters. It can be pretty powerful, if you know what you're doing. I was trying pretty simple. This is the code I was trying to do.

FTP 'www.sisterco.com/SourceFromMe/'

put BASICDB/SRCSAVF SAVF

Pretty lowkey and nitty gritty, huh!? Well I got some errors. "Cannot find host 'www.sisterco.com/SourceFromMe' " I checked everything I could think of. I tried to check case, just the domain name, with http, nothing worked. I then decided to try and send it to my Laptop. Command line, IPCONFIG (got my address), back to the iSeries. Try......with no luck.

I broke down and started to ask some questions. No surprise I'm not running a FTP server on my laptop, the iSeries is. So instead of doing a push try a get. This worked marvelously. I then used FileZilla to send to the SisterCo.

A couple of notes:

You may need to change transfer type to BINARY to avoid possible translation errors.

You may need a userid and password. (I had this going to the iSeries to do the get.

Let me know if I forgot anything major. I have been a programmer now (officially) for 1 yr. To be honest, I don't think I have had more than a couple of opportunities when I could have used a "business card." Do programmers need business cards? GT said he has only used a handful in the couple decades he has worked as a programmer. However the new Kid on the block says she has used them quite frequently.

So do I need a business card? I don't know. What do you think? I guess if I had some then the opportunities might present themselves. It would be kind of like that process when you buy a new car and then you see them EVERYWHERE. Work would pay for them. So should I get some. I don't know, probably. I'm only a couple of weeks behind. It, as standard for beta, came with a few bugs. So far there are 3 I know of. Two are documented on the Writer Zone.

Installation issues. (Didn't happen to me.)
System Hangs while running LiveWriter. (Again lucky.)
Doesn't refresh categories from Blogger.(Not so lucky.)

The first 2 issues are documented at the Writer Zone. Even though I didn't have an issue with the system "hangin" I followed their solution. Basically Windows starts a service which greedily hogs the CPU. Which is kind of Typical. To fix this is a 2 step process.

Stop the Service. net stop "Windows Live Setup Service"
Disable at startup. sc config "WLSetupSvc" start= disabled

So for awhile I am going to try this Desktop editor. It’s an organization for users of the iSeries and AS/400 IBM midrange systems. It is setup to be a forum for education and networking to further develop and enable users. They have webinars, webcasts, seminars, and a yearly conference. That conference this year will be at the end of April. I have been fortunate enough to be going. Yep! Work is sending me. I am so excited!!

I have been a blue collar man for so long. It is different to be getting such an opportunity. Work is footing the bill. I could never afford such an expense. There will be tons to learn. They are having like 500 sessions. There are technical sessions, professional development, business strategy, PHP, Websphere, RPGIV, and much more. I have only recently been perusing the session guide. It is actually a bit overwhelming. There is quite the emphasis on Web Applications. I want to take some classes that will help me with some current projects. I also want to learn some things that will help me as I move forward with my career. I will probably only take a few classes that lean towards IT Management. I am going to decide on a course of study in the next couple of days.

Decisions, decisions. I’ve heard the best choice is the firm choice. I am the "Newbie" here and I have struggled a fair bit. The people here have been great. They have taught me a lot.

One of the other programmers, a senior programmer/analyst, is really focused. She knows a ton. She has probably forgot more than I will ever learn. She has such a vast store of knowledge that I will admit I am a little bit intimidated. Heck, I’m kinda scared. Seriously though I look up to her. I am very glad she’s on my side.

Here’s what happened today. We had implemented a "search" function. A user was doing a name search on FREDDY’S and getting a SELECTOR ERROR. We tried to replicate the error and typed in FREDDY which worked. I suggested "just for giggles" put the apostrophe in. I think the guys over at Blaugh might be on to something. I know it will have all these great graphics and all. The thing is I think Windows XP is already memory intensive. If you have studied software evolution and I have, just a little. This is the mantra: "Software pushes hardware." It can be frustrating too! We have really good hardware, just think of how far we have come in the last 5 years. Not even a decade. It's a vicious cycle. What about the local University computer? You just want to hop on and check the Gmail. You can't wait to see if you won that newest StarWars gadget off of Ebay.

Well I stumbled across this tip at Lifehacker, Ithink. I love the simplicity of it all.

When you type in the URL just add an s like : https://gmail.google.com. That way you are using the Secure 128-bit encryption.

Another little suggestion to beat "keyloggers" is to amid typing in your password, type random alphameric characters into other fields. So the password "secret" could end up s45tedfchurxze98top. The red characters being actually typed in the password box and the others being typed in the search box, another window, or the url bar.

It takes a little time but what is your security worth? I want to get a flash drive all configured, so I can just plug and work. Once I get that going I'll post. It drove me nuts! I think it might have been stolen. So it was off to the store to get a new one. Some how I ended up in Target, Jackpot!

I really only had 2 requirements.

It had to be at least a Gig.

It needed to be cheap, $.

Well, this one definitely fit the bill. It's a Dane-Elec 1 GB USB 2.0 Drive. It was regularly $49.99, when I walked in it was on sale for $17.99! You can't beat that. So far so good. I like the USB 2.0. FAST!!
Here's one thing that I have always found interesting. It is a 1 GB drive. However it really has 965 MB, not a 1000 MB. I have to admit though there are 1012.486 bytes available.

I guess Math will never be my strong suit.

So my review. It's awesome.
I love it.
What do you like to use for portable storage?

Favicons: neat little things

Well it was time to have a little fun so I decided to build a favicon for this site. What is a favicon? Well if you look up in the address bar there is a little graphic to the left of the address. This graphic is a favicon. "Favorite Icon" is what it means. I'm guessing here. It took just a little bit of research but here's the jist of adding a favicon.

First jump over to here. You can make a favicon from an uploaded pic.

This is my favicon.

Then you need to insert this code between the<HEAD>opening tag and the </HEAD>closing tag.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href=http://www.wherehosted.com/favicon.ico />
<link rel="icon" href=http://www.wherehosted.com/favicon.ico />

http://www.whereverhosted.com/favicon.ico is the URL where you have your favicon hosted. We were debugging an RPGLE program w/ embedded SQL. While stepping through we discovered our bug pretty quick. So to end the debug session, we hit F3 to exit. This closed most of the files we had open. Yeah, a few files were left open. This could have posed a dirty data issue. After a brief analysis of the open files we discovered the files were opened by our embedded SQL.

This led to a discussion about "open" files and the process involved with "running" a program. I learned that the AS400 actually opens a new "instance" of a program and you will have object locks on files. There are good reasons to do this. If you look at some web applications, such as a "shopping cart", you want more than one.

I know I am omitting some details. I am a simple guy and I try to keep it simple. This has led me to a new process when I am debugging a program. If I think I might or do know I have some files open.

log out and log back in. (Sort of a reboot.)
check the library list. Rechargeable batteries have been around for awhile, but these have a nice twist. Some engineer got pretty clever on this one. He has tapped into one of the useful features of the grand USB port. It's power supplication. That's right! He has incorporated the charger into the battery.

Here is the low down on these Badboys. When it is time to recharge, you just pop the battery top to expose the male USB connector. You don't have to remember where the charger is, just find an available USB port. They are everywhere today; laptop, desktop,or USB hub.

You can purchase them from ThinkGeek.com and thanks go out to Techzi.

The Electricity Flows at CES

This has always been cool. This was definitely a new experience for me. I found it very informative and interesting. It was nice to see how a company plans out and budget projects for the year. (We didn't really cover budget items.)

Here's the basic process. We listed the current projects in demand for the year. Some of them were already started and nearing completion. After we had a fairly complete list we took the following steps along with the corresponding color coding scheme.

Green- Projects have to be done otherwise business fails.
Orange- Projects in process and near completion.
Blue- Possible to achieve in 6 man months.(2 people 3months or 3 people 2months or similar.)
Red- Projects involving the Programming team.
Yellow- Technical team required.

From this list we were able to see we could accomplish what was tasked before us. The projects were not overwhelming and insurmountable. Plus there were some fun tasks that wouldn't drain the life from us. I found the whole process to be an acceptable endeavor.

Does this sound standard? How have you conducted your project planning sessions? I welcome your comments.

Student Software for FREE!!

I know I should have done something about my idea, like 2 yrs ago when I had it. Honest! I was plan on making a compilation disc of open source software that I could get off the net. Being the struggling student I couldn't afford Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is a great alternative. There are some great anti-malware and anti-virus software out there on the net. Linux can be a little tricky, but it is free.

LifeHacker did a post about Software for Starving Students. So I had to go check it out. I don't use BitTorrent so I tried the direct download. Which was slower than my old Dialup connection. So....I don't know if I will ever get this ISO.

Well here is a partial list of the software that is on the CD image.

DeepBurner Free

FileZilla

FireFox

OpenOffice.org

Paint.net

PuTTY

SpyBot S&D

This is the Windows CD. It was basically setting up a point in the program to "break" and clean up sort of. I decided to post some of the code to better explain.

F#A // value

F@ // index

F@MAX const(20)// max for F@ index

P#A // value

P@ //index

P@MAX const(10)// max for P@ index

                          FOR F@ = 1 BY 1 TO F@MAX

                          IF F#N(F@) > *BLANK

                                       EVAL P@ = P@ + 1

                             (Some processing code)

                           IF P@ = P@MAX

                           EXSR WriteToRecord_SR

                           EXSR ClrParams_SR

                           END

                           END

                           ENDSR

The program breaks here, however there may be some more parameters to write to record so.....

                            IF P@ > *ZERO

                            EXSR WriteToRecord_SR

                            END

So that is kind of the gist of it. This can be a fairly effective way of processing. In the past I might have just written after every process. This kind of incorporates a "batch" sort of processing. Like I said this is a new concept which I may not totally have a grasp of. I understand this is fairly standard practice. One of my previous instructors had mentioned how he had placed code to process like 10 records at a time instead of 1. This enabled an hour job to be cut to 5 minutes! I would be willing to bet he placed some sort of similar code to account for the remaining pieces to get processed.

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

It appears that my system passed Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. A couple of issues that were found were my Nero 6.0 Ultra and McAfee Suite. So far it seems that Nero on the RC1 might work but the actual Release Candidate that gets shipped might not.

Thanks for the Vista news goes to Digital Inspiration.

I like to try new things so I am probably going to install Vista, even if only temporarily. I have recently upgraded my system so I now have a OS hard-drive and then a Data hard-drive.

The download is only 6.40 MB. When I ran the scan it suggested I upgrade to Vista Business. There were 2 device issues, the ethernet card and the sound card. Not a big deal just upgrade the drivers from the Windows update.

The program issues were the 2 aforementioned. Others that might pose a compatibility issue were

MSN Explorer - this one kind of surprised me.

ATI Desktop- I don't think this will be big issue.

HALO trial - I was going to delete it anyways.

J2SE Runtime - Hopefully not an issue, just upgrade.

I am going to put the install off til the Christmas break. Let me know if your system passes and any application issues you might encounter.

3 Powerful Commands for the iSeries

Here are 3 powerful commands that you can add or probably use more effectively in your tool list. (You probably already DO! I'm learning still.) Getting to use them effectively is the key. There is lots of detail to be had.

DSPFD - Display File Description

DSPFFD - Display File Field Description

DSPDBR - Display Database Relations

I haven't used the DSPDBR command much. The other two can really help you find out lots of information about a file. You can determine how many records, how many members. The file format level identifier # can really help. It is what is evaluated in a level check. (Another whole post in itself.) You can learn where the file is located, in what library. You can determine how many instances of a file there are.

I have only briefly touched on the these commands. In parts 1-3 I will delve deeper into the commands and how they can be maximised.

To understand the iSeries, you need to know IFS

I have to admit I am pretty new to the iSeries. I have used Windows most of my computing life. I try to stray outside my comfort zone and use linux. Truth be told that doesn't happen much. That just makes my job all that much sweeter. I get to play with an iSeries everyday!

In windows, files seem to be pretty basic. They are data. In the iSeries world they would be Physical Files or PF. On the iSeries you also have Logical Files or LF. A Physical File is a generic database file. A Physical File could also be a member or format. It is where the data is. Physical Files can also be referred to as Disk Files. Full-procedural file processing will access the disk files.

Data Definition Services or DDS are LF in that they define your database files. In come the RPG programs to access the Physical Files. This works only if you have your library list set correctly. This key point I can't stress enough.

Some of the most standard libraries on the iSeries are:

QSYS- System Lib Type SYS

QHLPSYS-System Lib Type SYS

QUSRSYS-System Lib Type SYS

DBU70 -System Lib Type SYS Database Utility

QTEMP -Temp Lib Type CUR This will change of course.

QGPL -GeneralLib Type USR this is the IBM general purpose library

USRTD -TruckDrivLib Type USR my library

These are just a few of the Libraries we use. The order of the types is pretty standard. One key thing to note is that when you execute a program is how your library list is set. This is because the system when needing files will search your Lib list til it finds a file your program has requested. Did you notice the "a" in the last sentence? You can have a file with the same name in different libraries. Totally different files with the same name. This can be a problem if the file your program accesses is not the one you intended. Undesired results can and will happen.

Well time to get off the soap box. Thanks for listening.

Did this help? What are the tools I like to use? I had to help a neighbor out. He had gotten a few bits and bytes of spyware on his system and needed some help. So heres a list of what I took.

SpyBot Search & Destroy: I think this is definitely one of the better spyware programs.
AVG-S: AVG is an awesome company. I use their anti-virus for my personal computer, works great.
CCLeaner: Cache Cleaner this is a freebie I got from MajorGeeks.com. Still a little new to me
HiJackThis!: This is a great tool but use CAUTION since you can do serious damage if you are not careful.

I carry these on my Crucial USB drive. It is only a 256 MB but it works. I also used a mainstay, cmd MSCONFIG. This was just to help clean some of the autostartup crap he had picked up. I tried REGEDIT but it couldn't be found. (I am still unclear on why that was. He's running XP.) After a few scans, there was this Batty.exe I wasn't sure about. It is a laptop and I wanted to make sure I did not kill his battery program. There was another more serious bot and we got it too.

Last night I checked with him and he says everythings fine. Let me know what you like.

Internet Explorer 7 explodes once again!

Well I must say that I am not really surprised. So they were SOL for a while.

From what I have overheard, MicroSoft will not have the patch out til mid November. That is about standard for MicroSoft. He works for L-3 Communications. He's a programmer. Anyways he wasn't sure what RPG is. I first mentioned that RPG is a prevalent language used at my job. He responded, "Isn't that a gamer language?" Well if you type RPG in Google that will be the majority of the sites you get. I think it comes from the Dungeon & Dragons era of Role Playing Games.

RPG is the acronym for Report Program Generator. It was developed initially around 1960-64 by IBM. So it's been around as long as COBOL, which stands for Common Business Oriented Language. We do use COBOL here in our shop. However I'll post on that later.

RPG has gone through a number of changes. Over they years IBM has released several flavors of RPG.

-RPG about the time of 80-punch car (SCARY) -RPG II the glorious year of 1969 (my birth) -RPG III 1978 new functions like DO, IF-ELSE -RPG IV is the latest uses the ILE RPG compiler

RPG IV allows the programmer to create modules. This point alone will really extend the strength of RPG.

The book I am studying now is RPG IV 3rd edition by Robert Cozzi, Jr. It is a really good book. He has a teaching style that I find easy to read.

I am discovering that to really understand RPG it helps to understand the iSeries IFS, Integrated File System. With the iSeries I have found one tip of Wisdom: "The Library List means Everything." Once you understand that concept it makes programming with RPG or any language in the iSeries a lot easier.

If you want to learn more I suggest RPG IV website.

Star Wars USB Darth Vader

These are pretty cool. Mimoco has just announced they are releasing in 2007 Star Wars themed jumpdrives. They are going to be available in a few different sizes. They will have a 1 GB, 2 GB, and a 4 GB. The news available now at the Star Wars Shop is that this Darth Vader in the 1 GB is going to sell for $79.95. That's a little steep for me since you can get a 2 GB at TigerDirect.com for $39.99.

I first heard about these at TechEblog. Its a really cool site with some of the best up to the minute information.

I have to admit I am some what of a Star Wars freak. So I hope Mimoco releases a bunch more. This series of four is labeled as Series 1. So that is promising. At least I was for 14 years. I have been delivering pop for over a decade. I have dealt with all kinds of consumers; Restaurants, Convenience stores, Grocery stores, Law offices, National box stores, Ski resorts, Golf courses, Government offices, Oil refineries, Schools, and T.V. stations just to name a few. I was even a limousine driver for a couple of years but that will be a different post.

As a driver you are the face of the company. As such I have had the opportunity to deal with all sorts of people from vastly differing walks of life across the gamit of income levels.

Do I know a lot? Hardly, if anything I have learned I know very little but I am constantly learning. There are opportunities every day. If we can only see them for what they (opportunities) are. For every chance I've noticed, I have missed ten others.

As a truck driver I have dealt with basic to advanced computer systems. We use Intermec handhelds. I use a Windows PC at home, school, and work. I dabble with Linux. I work heavily with an i Series at work.
As a Truck Driver!? How, you ask.
Well my main position at work has changed. My title is now Programmer/Analyst. I still drive a couple of Saturdays a month. So my CDL is current.

I love computers and the internet! Hopefully I can pass on what I have learned. I enjoy writing. I admit I can be a bit lazy, so a fair share of what I have learned are hacks. A quick fix to get the job done. Have I screwed up and crashed a system? Well not quite. Am I a Hacker? Perhaps, but I've been called worse. I won't apologize. I am a Truck Driver.

The nice thing about the beginning is that the field is open. I look forward to your comments and email. I will end on this quote:

"There are few problems that can't be solved with the proper application of High Explosives.. and maybe a computer."- Navy Seals (modified by me)
